Short Bits

We moved a lot when I was a kid. Starting new schools so often, I learned how to function in a highly ambiguous setting, where all is unknown; it's a valuable skill, although generally not one learned at such a young age. It's been invaluable to me now, though, on the many occasions when I'm confronted by aspects of Mr. Fresh Hell's culture that in the beginning appear so foreign and incomprehensible, occasions when I automatically feel the tension of those long ago school days.

Among other things, as the new kid I learned how fun it can be to re-invent oneself. None of the other kids had known me from the sandbox - I could be or do or say practically anything without fear of contradiction. It wasn't necessarily lying, but more along the lines of presenting myself in the best possible light. And of course, in the beginning the grass on the other side of the fence was awfully new, and awfully green.

My glory in this self rejuvenation was probably not very healthy for an already bookish dreamy child prone to imaginative flights of fancy.

From a self-improvement standpoint, the constant moves ostensibly gave me a chance to turn over a new leaf quite often. But did I? Not really.

Here's the secret I found: more often than not, the grass is often disappointingly just grass, no greener or better than anywhere else, and while I could physically move from place to place I always carried the baggage of my self.

On some days the baggage of myself makes me feel like a pack-donkey and, as donkeys do, I want the sweet green grass, right over... there. On other days, I skip through security with nothing more to burden me than a kerchief, fluttering in my hand; no luggage to check; no ungainly worries to maneuver. And sometimes I find I slip in the damp of the sweet, green grass and fall on my bum.

If I were only a centaur I'd have the sure-footedness of the donkey and the ticket-handling skills of a human. Only mythical creatures can truly be happy.

Sam - lovely comment my dear - and thanks. The sweetness of the new grass only lasts for the newness - once it becomes every day grass, it gets old.

Stoic - True, I should be in marketing. I've been wasting my skills. I don't think I realized the baggage of the self so much at that juncture as I look back at the child with different eyes.

All the realization that we each carry baggage reminds me of a very convoluted philosophical discussion from back in my university days.

It started with an effort to parse the word recreation, which regardless of all the current sports competition implications was originally meant to be an activity which provided the opportunity to re-create or refresh oneself.

It wasn't surprising when it all segued into question which part of the self held greater credence - one's heart or one's brain. A friend said it best - it's all part of the self, and importance is meaningless since we take both with us wherever we go. None of are able to travel great distances without 'luggage.'
