Stuff I Cannot Do

1. Concentrate on any smidgen of inspiration for a decent blog post.
2. Have a telephone conversation with my mother without rolling my eyes into the back of my head.
3. Suffer fools.
4. Stop asking questions.
5. Learn any lesson painlessly.
6. Have a child.
7. Throw a ball without throwing like a girl.
8. Watch local news.
9. Break hearts.
10. Eat without spilling on myself.
11. Draw anything other than a stick figure.
12. Abandon hope.
13. Smile on command.
14. Cut my own hair.
15. Leave a hotel room really messy.
16. Believe the universe is anything but indifferent.

I'll try pretty much everything else, though.

A thrown-together list that's anything but! You end with a picture of the writer - a little tentative but always _engaged_ in the world around.

What a fun post!! You made me smile and laugh outright, which is truly a wonderful thing and a sign of a successful post.

I personally recall several of your items with fond nostalgia, especially item 2 since I remember a letter several years ago discussing the variability of individual 'truths'.

I liked your Tea in the Desert post and wonder why you haven't thought of doing one on learning to be a chameleon, since you've often had to adapt to new places, cultures and people.

tom - thanks. I wanted to convey the most abject self-pity without actually doing so, partly...

On the other hand, my concentration level with writing recently has been so difficult that it was a post born of frustation rather than anything.

Now...have we tempted you to start your own blog, hmmm?

Kaz-
Thanks - it means the world coming from you. I thought a few items on that list might jog your memory a bit.

I have to confess that I've saved many letters over the years that I've received, but none I wrote. I'll have to delve into my paper archives to follow that conversation.

Glad you liked the Tea in the Sahara - I felt positive about what I wrote but it's really only a small part of what was truly one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had in my life.

I will think very carefully about the chameleon concept, as it is something I have experienced often, most recently in the past few years.

I have many more "adventure" stories up my sleeve, however...so who knows which will come first?
